Google Wave & Journalism

From a 202er:

Hi Katy,

My friend at Purdue just posted this link on my facebook wall and I find it fascinating, especially since this week we begin the interview process. I thought it would be an interesting article to show the class/put on the blog.

Check it out

This article is interesting and relevant to what we are learning in class. I did not agree, however, with the "Transparent writing process" section of the text. Part of the writing process for reporters (and strat. comm. gurus as well) is the ability to sit down and brainstorm/envision ideas. If I knew that Google Wave users had the ability to look at my writing early in the process, I personally feel that I would inhibit my "creative juices" from flowing because I would fear that some of my materials may offend people. Journalists need personal space to draft and revise content before it goes into the public sphere of knowledge.

Also, the transparency aspect of Google Wave may pose some legal issues. How would a court deal with libel or free-speech if the public had real-time access to look at documents? If a journalist had offensive material online that was not intended for public view but eventually leaked out, would journalists be responsible for these actions?
