Promises, promises

So it turns out that Barack Obama handed out a lot of assurances during his campaign. Many, many more than his predecessors (about double Bush and Clinton).
These came out in speeches and his online content but also very prominently in his campaign advertising.
Now PolitiFact wants to check out how good he is at keeping them.
What is the role of campaign advertising in establishing policy? How closely should we scrutinize campaign ads? Are they really about issues or really about personality? How do they matter?

While I'm not surprised by the volume of promises Obama made on the campaign trail (sounds like the kind of thing a politician would do), it does interest me that he made twice as many as either of his two predecessors. It is a strange time for America--we discarded the jaded and cynical self-defenses that have been growing since the 1960s, and dared to believe in someone, if only for a moment. The expectations and the hopes on one man are too great, as the promises indicate. I wonder how people will respond as they realize Obama is just another man. Will Obama's record be tainted merely because of the hopes people connected with him?
