This is an object lesson what can happen when you prepare your strat comm (or even journalism) in advance and test it on the Web.
The Green Bay Packers posted for a time on Thursday a story announcing Brett Favre's retirement. They say it was an error, but that may not satisfy fans or the blogosphere. Local news provided a bit more on the story.

The whole Brett Favre retiring story is almost getting old at this point. I remember a few years ago when Favre was supposed to speak at a press conference on whether or not he was coming back for the upcoming season. The press conference started 15-30 minutes late, and when Favre came out to talk and reporters were asking him about whether or not he was coming back, Favre said he was not going to make an announcement, and he said that he wasn't sure where reporters got the idea that we was going to speak about his retirement. So basically this whole story is almost like a repeat of what happened a few years ago. Here we go again with people worrying about Favre's status for next year, especially with the Packers.com "breaking news" incident.
Although I hate to say this being an opposing fan and all, but let's face it. Favre will never retire. He is immortal. End of story.
He's got a year, maybe two, left, but thats not what I want to post about. packers.com has grown in leaps and bounds as a website in the past five years. It's too bad they made the mistake they did. I don't think it will have much of an impact on traffic to the website. If anything it will spike the visit count in the coming weeks because there is a good chance his decision will be made in the following two weeks.
Sorry Anna. Favre is officially retired.
This media slip really affected the way I thought about the retirement announcement yesterday. I wasn't surprised at all when it was made official, thanks to this "oops" in the media.
