In the News

Here's some of what I've been reading about lately:
- moveon.org, "Betray Us" and New York Times ad rates
- Politics in Pakistan
- OJ Simpson (though I really wish I weren't reading about this ...)
- Fed rate cut
- Blackwater in Iraq
- protests in (and about) Jena
- Taser use in Florida
- notable polygamy trial
Quiz questions could come from these, comments you post or developments over the weekend.

Here on campus, I've heard a lot about the Halliburton protests and how it is similar to the Dow protests of 1967.

great addition. i'd love to talk more about whether it really is similar to 1967. do you guys feel like this is a crystallizing moment for you? do you want to end the war? will protesting halliburton do that?

Though it might seem absurd to compare the temperance movement and prohibition in America to the story in Pakistan about contaminated liquor, my first thought was to take a comparative perspective. Muslims choose not to drink liquor for religious reasons, as did many of the men and women involved in the temperance movement in America. Moreover, bootleggers and dangerous forms of contaminated booze have clearly become a problem in Pakistan, where 40 people died recently from drinking bad liquor. I guess I just found this story interesting to ponder and to mourn, as though American and Pakistani culture are so different, one can see similarities.

I've been watching the controversy over Columbia University's president inviting Iran's leader to speak.
