Social media and an infamous "poll"

A blog submission from a 202er:

Hi Katy,

I apologize for the lateness of this email, but today in another one of my classes we were talking about this story and I thought for sure it would be up on the blog today, but it wasn't. Someone started a facebook poll asking if President Obama should be assassinated!! The questions it poses are many. First of all, should this be considered a threat to the President of the United States by the person who started a poll?

Just thought you might be interested in sharing this with our class,

Dan

would the secret service go after all you replied to that poll? if the people could potentially be dangerous to the president why not track down all of the people who say bad things about a president. but then how would anyone keep track of all the people who say terrible things about obama. Another thing that strikes me is that someone alerted the SS about the poll. Not someone who works for FB but a regular citizen and user of FB reported it. While I understand that there are millions of people who use FB and the makes can't control and monitor it all, that means that the rest of us are in charge of monitoring, or helping to monitor FB. Does everyone partake in this? If you see something on FB that you know probably shouldn't be there do you just move on and hope someone else deals with it? What are our responsibilities as FB users?
