The Pentagon's reason for banning the photos: bad PR regarding a questionable foreign policy loaded with a convenient/tragic bundle of interest conflicts.
Families' reason for blocking the photos: privacy.
One of these is worth respecting, the other is despicable.
I think Mario hits the nail on the head. I also think it makes sense that the press only run photos of the coffins with the permission of family members.
