What news stories are you monitoring this week? Here's a start on mine. Post yours via comments.
- Super Tuesday
- horrific mall killing outside Chicago
- Britney in crisis
- economic stimulus
- Kenya
- salary for our new chancellor
- umm, what's that? snow in our forecast? get outta here!
And while you're at it, think about how these kinds of stories play to the communication values we discussed in lecture. Britney and prominence. Kenya and conflict. Which have the greatest quantitative impact? Qualitative?

I just read about the horrible Tornado that hit the South specifically Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The most destruction was in Tennessee where 30 people were killed. I also read that there was very little warning about the storm and that many people didn't know it was coming.
I would take our crazy Wisconsin snow storms any day over a deadly tornado.
I just heard that the eharmony is getting a law suit thrown at them from members of the gay community ?! I am about to go follow up on it but if anyone knows any more details please post some links or info !! thanks !
Tanzania taking the AU chair after a number of bids from Khartoum
So I saw Barack Obama speak when he was here a few months ago, and know I occasionally receive e-mails from his camp. The latest one claimed he won the most delegates on Super Tuesday, but checking with other sources, that was not the case. He was 2 behind Mrs. Clinton. The e-mail was sent before all the votes were counted, but I think that was risky. Now his camp looks like they can't do math. It's a little worrisome, but I think they did it just to gain momentum.
And how about Hilary investing $5 million of her personal fortune? Maybe Barack does have the momentum...
Wow, in local news coverage of local news media, it looks like Cap. Times is really scaling down.
That gets a big fat :( from me, currently trying to believe print media isn't dying completely.
Here's the story:

I've been following the writer's strike, and today I read that everything could possibly be settled by next week.
Article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/08/business/media/08strike.html?em&ex=1202619600&en=85b2d94b2bbea35e&ei=5087%0A
If writers get back to work by next week, we could see new episodes on the air in four to six weeks. I miss my fix of "The Office."
Just adding to the above comment, the NY Times is now reporting that a tentative deal has been reached and the strike might be over on Monday morning ... could be a big sigh of relief for Academy Awards fans :)
Also, I read MTV's president, Christina Norman, is stepping down. According to the NY Times article about it, she brought us the celebreality shows on VH1 (think "Flavor of Love") and then moved to MTV in 2005 and brought us "The Hills" and "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila." Viewership has been slipping, although she did not say that is why she's leaving.
I also saw an interesting piece in the NY Times about NBC suspending a reporter for making "inappropriate" comments about Chelsea Clinton helping Hillary's presidential campaign on air and showing other video clips about Bill Clinton.

What about the kidney theft ring in India!! Those involved have taken and sold at least 500 kidneys!
According to victims, surgens responsible for the "thefts" targeted the poorer population in India and lured them to a location with the promise of employment. When victims arrived, they were sedated or forced onto an operating table at gun-point. After the kidney had been removed and the victims awoke, they were greeted by masked men who would tell them "we have taken your kidney. If you tell anyone, we'll shoot you."
Here's the AP story:
KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) -- The alleged leader of a crime ring accused of illegally removing hundreds of kidneys has been deported from Nepal and sent to India.
Amit Kumar had been arrested Thursday at a jungle resort in Nepal, and Indian officials had been seeking his extradition since then.
Authorities in India have said that Kumar's group sold up to 500 kidneys to clients from around the world in the past nine years. The ring is said to have removed some kidneys from poor laborers held at gunpoint.
Authorities had been searching for Kumar since he fled last month, after police said they broke up his transplant racket.
Police are also investigating whether he was involved in illegal kidney transplants in Nepal.
You can't make this stuff up!
CNN has just reported that Hillary Clinton has replaced her campaign manager.
How about Turkey's parliament lifting the ban on headscarves in universities. There's some major progress.
What about the explosion at a sugar refinery in Georgia? I heard that six people were missing.
