Coach v. Columnist

Check out this column in today's State Journal, commenting on Badger Football Coach Bret Bielema's statements on the media rumor mill. The comments posted to the bottom are also worth reading.
Who's right? Does Bielema have a point that reporters speculate too early? Or does Oates prevail with his idea that reporting is necessary and simply getting spoon-fed by the Athletic Department shouldn't be what he and his colleagues are about?

This article left me confused as to who is in the right, who is in the wrong, and what these people were even so heated about in the first place. The comments made below the article on the State Journal's website were also thought-provoking. In the end I suppose Bielema sounds rediculous for "going off" on investigative reporters for doing their job, but the article definitely seemed like little more than a rant by a journalist lacking something better to write about.

One of the people who commented on the article made a great point when he said that people expect the "good" from the media but hash out when reporters write about the "bad". With so much emphasis on unbiased reporting, reporters are only doing their job when they present the facts, which is exactly what the journalist did. He was "6-0". If Bielema didn't want to expose anything to the public, he could have simply declined instead of attacking a profession. It is, however, difficult to not feel a need to defend a profession I believe in.
