New administration meets the press

It seems like the claims that the news media adore Barack Obama may be on the wane. Lots of concern and complaints about access.
What obligation does a presidential administration have to give reporters access? How does Obama's affinity for alternative information channels affect the traditional news media (e.g., bypassing the press during the campaign and making announcements directly to voters via Web sites, blogs and texts)?

Obama has a gifted team of image managers. I think they create a false impression of being open when they distribute the information themselves. Not having reporters at a second swearing-in is so bogus! I think it is interesting (and totally appropriate) that the AP and other wires won't distribute the photos from the White House for them, but on the other hand when the media is there to take photos on the president's first day it is more the courtesy of the tradition anyway... it's not like they're going to use unflattering shots on such a ceremonious day. Anyway, it doesn't seem like they're making moves toward the "transparency" we heard so much about.
